Abstract
This keynote will explore critical pedagogies for contemporary times. Thinking about the teacher or student as entangled within a web of relations and affective experiences, I examine how we might ask new and critical questions about what it means to teach and to learn in higher education, and to live well together.

Abstract
With Artificial Intelligence (AI), higher education today faces growing pressure to clarify what forms of learning remain distinctively higher, with implications for teaching practice. This keynote argues that one underexamined dimension of higher learning lies in how students engage with uncertainty during inquiry. Drawing on research in science education, this talk explores epistemic practices that support students to grapple with uncertainty.

Professor Wayne Holmes - UCL Knowledge Lab, UCL Institute of Education, University College London, UK
Venue: The Arc, LHN-TR+12, Level B2
Abstract
While Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) has at its core the desire to support student learning, experience from other AI domains suggest that such ethical intentions are not by themselves sufficient. If unintended consequences are to be avoided, there is the need to consider explicitly issues such as fairness, bias, and agency. However, it is also clear that the ethics of AIED cannot be reduced to typical AI ethics questions alone. Given that AIED is the application of AI in education, the ethics of AIED needs also to account for the ethics of education – the ethics of choice of pedagogy, of what constitutes useful knowledge, of power relations between teachers and their students, of the accuracy and validity of assessments, and so on. In this workshop, following a brief introduction, we will be exploring together the ethics of AI in education. Participants will be invited to explore a range of AIED scenarios, to identify emergent ethical issues, to take a more nuanced approach than is typical of AI ethics discussions, and to agree appropriate responses.

Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is frequently hailed as a ‘solution’ for education’s core problems, leading many countries to feel pressurised into integrating AI in education. However, such claims tend to be aspirational and overly simplistic, forgetting issues such as agency, pedagogy, surveillance, efficacy, and ethics (Holmes et al., 2025). In fact, teaching and learning with AI all too often aims to replace educator roles; while teaching and learning about AI almost always focuses on training people to use AI, rather than helping them thrive in a world increasing impacted by AI. This talk will explore AI and education from a critical studies perspective. It will challenge many of the key myths and will pose more questions than it answers.

Abstract
This keynote will challenge the assumptions many educators have about embracing AI. I argue that regardless of technological innovations, the core principles of teaching remain the same. One of those principles, especially in but not limited to the social sciences, is producing socially conscious individuals. Thinking about AI and other forms of technology as tools, rather than ends or necessities to be implemented at every turn, is crucial in making educators go back to the basics of teaching. The ultimate goal of universities should be to produce good humans. In doing so, I discuss my own work in making academic work more accessible to the public through my podcast, or what can be termed as public pedagogy.

Abstract
Higher education is often associated with academic development in the classroom. However, what if it could also encourage student proactivity outside of school? Hear from the student contributors of Project Avigate as they reflect on their experience, offering thoughts about how higher education could encourage students to become active proponents of socio-cultural change.

Venue: The Arc, LHN-TR+12, Level B2
Abstract
In this in-person session, our Keynote Speaker Dr Karen Gravett will invite participants to explore questions that can inform a critical and relational approach to learning design. Participants will consider approaches to the thoughtful integration of AI in learning design as well as other key questions in relation to their own teaching.
