What is civil-military relations and why should we study it?

Civil–military relations ask a simple but profound question: how do societies build armed forces strong enough to protect them, yet restrained enough to never dominate them? This masterclass introduces the core tensions that shape this field—from the civil–military problématique to the big questions of obedience, oversight, legitimacy, and coups.
