NTU SoH South Asia Research Reception

8 October 2025

5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Registrations are closed

Dear all,

Greetings from NTU South Asia cluster. We’re a group of academics from the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences and we’d like to invite you to a Scholars of South Asia in Singapore reception at the Centre for Contemporary Arts at Gilman Barracks at 5:00-6:30pm on the 8th October 2025. Our hope is that we can begin to get to know each other better, and perhaps to collaborate intellectually more than we currently do.

To RSVP for the reception, please fill in your information at the Register button.

Despite the fact that Singapore is small, there is a large community of scholars with an interest in South Asia and we’d also like to propose an initiative to give us a reason to meet regularly beyond our own institutional duties. We propose starting a monthly gathering of South Asianists to meet and discuss ‘works-in-progress’ by members of the community. The basic idea is as follows:

Once a month a volunteer circulates a paper/article that they are currently working on and a week later, we come together in a relaxed and informal setting to catch up over snacks/drinks and to discuss the paper. We’re aiming for something much less formal than a talk/workshop. Attendance is not compulsory nor are copious comments! We hope to host the meetings at Gilman Barracks since it’s a relatively central location and there are plenty of bars in the area to which interested parties can adjourn after the meeting.

We know this won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, and we also recognise that everyone is already overwhelmed with multiple commitments and may not be able to join in regularly or at all. However, if this sounds like something you’d like to participate in, however sporadically, then please register your interest by clicking on this link.

If you’d like to volunteer to circulate a paper for discussion at one of the meetings, please also click here. Anyone is welcome to volunteer!

Tapsi Mathur, Jessica Hinchy and Emma Flatt
