Join us for the NTU Sociology Seminar Series: SMU–NTU Joint Seminar, featuring 2 distinguished scholars exploring power, identity, and belonging across transnational contexts.
Speaker 1: Asst Prof Jiaqi Liu (Singapore Management University)
Topic: The Social Origins of Transnational Repression: Diasporic Brokerage and the Coercive Reach of Global China
Asst Prof Liu examines how migrant brokers, embassy staff, and hometown officials facilitate transnational repression, revealing how coercion intersects with migrants’ struggles for recognition, status, and belonging. His research bridges political sociology, international migration, and digital technologies.
Speaker 2: Prof Kamaludeen Nasir (Nanyang Technological University)
Topic: Dribbling Divides: Muslim Footballers Between Faith, Nation and the Global Game
Drawing on his latest book published by Oxford University Press (2026), Prof Nasir explores how elite Muslim footballers navigate religious devotion, national identity, Islamophobia, and the commercial pressures of global football, reshaping public perceptions of Islam both on and off the pitch.
Together, these presentations offer fresh sociological perspectives on how individuals navigate power, negotiate identities, and challenge boundaries in an interconnected world.
